Chest X-Ray
Fast, painless imaging to diagnose lung conditions, infections, and chest abnormalities

What is a Chest X-Ray?
A Chest X-Ray is a quick, painless imaging test that uses electromagnetic radiation to create detailed pictures of the structures inside your chest, including the heart, lungs, airways, blood vessels, and bones.
It is one of the most common and valuable diagnostic tools in respiratory medicine, helping doctors detect and monitor various lung conditions.
Key Benefits:
- Quick procedure - takes only 10-15 minutes
- Painless and non-invasive
- Low radiation exposure (digital X-rays)
- No special preparation required
- Affordable and widely available
What Can a Chest X-Ray Detect?
Lung Conditions
- Pneumonia
- Tuberculosis (TB)
- Lung cancer or nodules
- COPD and emphysema
- Collapsed lung (pneumothorax)
- Pleural effusion
Heart Conditions
- Enlarged heart (cardiomegaly)
- Congestive heart failure
- Pericardial effusion
Bone Conditions
- Rib fractures
- Spinal abnormalities
- Bone tumors
Other Findings
- Foreign bodies
- Medical device placement
- Hiatal hernia
When is a Chest X-Ray Recommended?
- Persistent cough lasting more than 2-3 weeks
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Chest pain or tightness
- Coughing up blood (hemoptysis)
- Unexplained fever with respiratory symptoms
- Suspected pneumonia or bronchitis
- After chest trauma or injury
- Pre-employment or pre-surgery screening
- TB screening for high-risk individuals
Types of Chest X-Ray Views
PA View
Standard view with beam from back to front.
Lateral View
Side view to locate abnormalities.
AP View
For bedridden patients.
Decubitus View
Detects small pleural effusions.
How to Prepare
Clothing
Wear loose-fitting clothes without metal buttons or zippers.
Remove Jewelry
Remove all jewelry, piercings, and eyeglasses from chest area.
Pregnancy
Inform your doctor if you are or may be pregnant.
No Special Prep
No fasting or medication changes needed.
What to Expect
The procedure takes 10-15 minutes and involves:
- Positioning: Stand in front of X-ray plate or lie on table
- Breathing: Take a deep breath and hold for few seconds
- Image Capture: Images taken from different angles
- Completion: Resume normal activities immediately

Radiation Safety
Very Low Risk
- Very low radiation dose
- Equivalent to 2-3 days natural background
- Benefits far outweigh risks
Special Precautions
- Pregnant women - alternative imaging considered
- Children - only when necessary
- Shielding provided for sensitive areas
Understanding Results
Normal Result
Clear lungs, normal heart size, no abnormalities
Abnormal Result
May show infiltrates, masses, fluid, or other findings
Limitations
- Cannot detect very small nodules or early lung cancer
- May miss certain interstitial lung diseases
- Cannot evaluate pulmonary embolism (needs CT)
- Limited detail for mediastinal structures
