Bronchitis
Expert diagnosis and treatment for acute and chronic bronchitis with personalized respiratory care

What is Bronchitis?
Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchial tubes, the airways that carry air to and from your lungs. When inflamed, they produce excess mucus, causing coughing and difficulty breathing.
According to CDC, approximately 5% of adults report having chronic bronchitis each year. Acute bronchitis often develops after a cold and typically resolves within 2-3 weeks.
Two main types:
Acute Bronchitis
Usually viral, symptoms develop quickly and last 10-14 days.
Chronic Bronchitis
Long-term condition, primarily caused by smoking. A type of COPD.
Causes & Risk Factors
Acute Bronchitis
- Viral infections (cold, flu)
- Bacterial infections (less common)
- Tobacco smoke exposure
- Dust, fumes, air pollution
Chronic Bronchitis
- Cigarette smoking (90% of cases)
- Secondhand smoke exposure
- Occupational dust/chemicals
- Air pollution
Important: Smoking is the single most important risk factor for chronic bronchitis. Quitting smoking can significantly improve symptoms.
Common Symptoms
Symptoms can range from mild to severe. Acute bronchitis often follows a cold or flu.
Acute Bronchitis Symptoms
Persistent Cough
Lasting 10-20 days
Mucus Production
Clear, white, or green phlegm
Shortness of Breath
Especially with activity
Mild Fever
Low-grade fever and chills
Chronic Bronchitis Symptoms
- Productive cough lasting 3+ months per year for 2 years
- Frequent respiratory infections
- Wheezing and shortness of breath
- Bluish fingernails or lips (cyanosis)

⚠️ Seek medical attention if you have:
- Cough lasting more than 3 weeks
- Fever higher than 100.4°F (38°C)
- Coughing up blood
- Difficulty breathing or wheezing
- Repeated episodes of bronchitis
Diagnosis
- Medical History & Physical: Symptoms, smoking history, lung auscultation
- Chest X-Ray: To rule out pneumonia
- Sputum Test: Analysis of mucus
- Pulmonary Function Tests: To assess lung function
- Pulse Oximetry: Measures oxygen levels
