Skin Prick Allergy Test

What is a Skin Prick Allergy Test?

A Skin Prick Test (SPT) is a quick, painless, and highly accurate diagnostic test used to identify specific allergens that trigger allergic reactions. It's considered the gold standard for diagnosing allergies to airborne substances, foods, and certain medications.

During the test, small amounts of suspected allergens are introduced into the skin's surface. If you're allergic to a substance, you'll develop a small raised bump (wheal) surrounded by redness (flare) within 15-20 minutes, similar to a mosquito bite.

Why choose Skin Prick Testing?

  • Results available in just 15-20 minutes
  • Highly sensitive and specific (90-95% accuracy)
  • Can test up to 50+ allergens in one session
  • Minimally invasive with no needles
  • Cost-effective compared to blood allergy tests

Inform Your Doctor

Tell about any skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis) or pregnancy

What to Expect During the Test

The test takes about 30-45 minutes and involves:

  • Preparation: Your forearm or back is cleaned with alcohol
  • Application: Small drops of allergen extracts are placed on the skin
  • Pricking: A small lancet pricks through each drop to introduce allergen just below skin surface
  • Waiting: You wait 15-20 minutes while reactions develop
  • Reading: The doctor measures any wheals (bumps) and redness
  • Cleaning: The area is cleaned, and you may apply anti-itch cream if needed

Note: The test is generally not painful - you may feel a mild pinprick sensation. Children tolerate it well.

Understanding Your Results

✅ Negative Result

No wheal or redness - unlikely to be allergic to that substance

⚠️ Positive Result

Wheal of 3mm or larger with redness - indicates allergy

📊 Grading Scale

1+ (small) to 4+ (large) - larger reactions indicate stronger sensitivity

🔄 Correlation

Results must be correlated with your symptoms and history

Safety and Limitations

✅ Very Safe

  • Minimal risk of severe reaction
  • Emergency equipment always available
  • Safe for children and adults
  • No needles or blood draw

⚠️ Limitations

  • Cannot test all allergens
  • May need blood test if severe eczema
  • Medications can affect results
  • False positives possible

When Skin Prick Test is Not Recommended

  • Patients with severe uncontrolled asthma
  • History of anaphylaxis to test allergens
  • Severe eczema on testing area
  • Taking medications that cannot be stopped
  • Recent severe allergic reaction
